Microsuction is a gentle, water-free method of removing excess earwax under direct visual guidance. It is quick, precise and suitable for many people experiencing blocked ears, muffled hearing, fullness, tinnitus or wax-related discomfort.
Before treatment, we carry out an ear examination to confirm whether wax build-up is present and whether microsuction is appropriate. If treatment is not suitable, we will explain why and advise you on the next best step.
Preparation: in some cases, using olive oil or suitable ear drops for a few days beforehand may help soften wax and make removal easier. Do not use drops if you have ear pain, discharge or a known perforated eardrum unless a clinician has advised you to do so.
Your appointment usually includes a symptom review, ear examination, microsuction if appropriate, a final recheck and aftercare advice. Most appointments take around 20–30 minutes.
This service is suitable for adults and older teenagers aged over 16 with suspected earwax build-up, blocked or muffled hearing, hearing aid wax build-up, ear fullness or tinnitus that may be linked to wax.
We may recommend olive oil or ear drops for a few days before your visit to soften wax. Do not use ear drops if you have ear pain, discharge or a perforated eardrum unless advised by a clinician.
Microsuction is generally very safe when carried out by trained professionals. If treatment is not appropriate on the day, we will explain the reason and may advise you to see your GP or another specialist.
